The
owner has chosen to offer this instrument as-is. Still
there is so little wrong with it that we feel it represents
one of the best values among the instruments currently being
offered through us. It is not generally understood just
how useful single manual harpsichords such as this can be
to a busy professional or committed amateur. The foot
pedals, while not entirely historically defensible, give the
instrument a flexibility that nearly exceeds that of a standard
double-manual harpsichord. Used with self-discipline,
few objections can be raised. This instrument will thrive
in either domestic or performance situations.
Cosmetically,
the instrument shows its age very gracefully; overall the
effect is of a well-kept instrument in nearly showroom condition.
The instrument is currently playable. There are two
issues, however, that do need to be addressed. First,
the plastic jacks are original to the instrument and, but
for the admirable environmental care given to the instrument,
would likely have passed well beyond serviceability by this
point. Second, after thirty-four years of resisting
tension, the hitchpin rail mouldings have started to pull
away from the case walls in spots and probably should be replaced.
The instrument has spent much of its life tuned to a' = 415
Hz. If the buyer contemplates needing to play at a'
= 440 Hz, the instrument should be adapted to transpose.
We will be glad to send electronically a copy (in .pdf form)
of our report on the condition of this instrument to seriously
interested parties. We would of course be happy to consult
and quote on the repairs we have contemplated.
